Bengaluru-based Pustaka Digital Library sells and lends eBooks in vernacular languages such as Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam. What started as a physical library in 2012 at her home in Bengaluru, is today also an eBook selling and lending portal - www.pustaka.co.in (October 2014) - stocking 250 titles in Tamil, Kannada, Telugu and Malayalam. The portal also offers eBooks for the mobile platform, and today, Pustaka is the first ever to digitise books in vernacular languages.

Bringing eBooks to the Indian vernacular reader

All of us grew up reading books in our native languages. We all started to speak in our mother tongue before learning English at school. Unfortunately as we grow up, we either stop reading books or we move on to reading English books. One of the reasons for this, as we found out after talking to people, is the non-availability of vernacular books. The idea of the Pustaka Lending Library in Bangalore was mooted to solve the problem of non-availability of Tamil books in Bangalore. We later on added eBooks in Telugu for the consumption of our readers from the Andhra region.

Pustaka launches India’s first language eBook portal

Pustaka Digital Media today launches India’s first eBook selling and lending portal in vernacular languages -www.pustaka.co.in. Initially www.pustaka.co.in will have 150 plus titles from the eminent authors of Tamil, Kananda and Telugu languages. The company plans to launch digitization model for all Indian language books by the end of 2020 based on the response from both reader and author community.
